TSDK High School
Mission: Our mission is to cultivate a safe, connected, and accountable learning environment where all students are empowered to succeed. We are dedicated to ensuring that every student graduates with the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary to thrive as contributing members of both the Deaf community and today’s interconnected world.
The High School Department at the Tennessee School for the Deaf includes students from grades 9-12. Our focus is on creating an accessible, language-rich environment that is designed to accommodate the individual needs of each student. Our teachers are highly qualified in both Deaf Education and their content area. Teachers are skilled in practicing the delicate balance between supporting our students and pushing them to become more independent and responsible as they encroach adulthood. We focus on creating a course of study for each student that is aligned with preparing them for their post-secondary goals. Our transition counselor works closely with students beginning at age 14 to help our young adults brainstorm and develop a comprehensive plan for their future so they are prepared when they leave our campus. Additionally, our school counselor is available to help students develop healthy social-emotional skills.
Approximately 70% of our students live on campus with the other 30% commuting daily. Our school day runs from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM. All students have a free breakfast and lunch provided to them in the dining hall. There are opportunities for after-school clubs and athletics for students who are interested.
Our school-wide Positive Behavior Intervention & Support system (PBIS) encourages students to “TSD”.
Students can graduate with one of four (4) diploma options:
The right diploma pathway for each student is determined by their IEP team.
All High School students participate in district assessments to monitor academic growth as well as the required End of Course (EOC) examinations required by the state of Tennessee. EOC courses include English I, English II, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Biology, and US History.
To receive a regular high school diploma from the Tennessee School for the Deaf, students must complete and pass the required 22 credits, have satisfactory attendance, and meet the goals of their IEP. Credit requirements are:
