Elementary

The elementary school at the Tennessee School for the Deaf is full of energy, excitement, and learning! We believe in educating the whole child, teaching students both academics and social skills needed to be a successful member of society. Each day lessons are taught in American Sign Language (ASL) with spoken English used to support. Instruction is based on the Tennessee Academic Standards. The rigor of these standards is constructed each day through differentiated instruction. Our dedicated staff work with our K-6th grade students in small group settings to ensure each student need is met.

The elementary program offers a variety of other helpful resources for students:

  • Speech Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physical Therapy
  • Individual Counseling Sessions
  • Grade level Counseling Sessions
  • Psychotherapy
  • Bridges Program
  • STEM challenges

Our elementary school is a safe place for students to learn and grow and is staffed with experienced, dedicated teachers. We believe that students learn best when they Take Responsibility, Show Respect, and Do the Safe Thing. Our School Wide Positive Behavior Support system allows us to guide students as they learn social and emotional skills in addition to their academic knowledge. TSD Elementary is a great place to grow and be challenged.

Library

The materials and instruction provided by the TSD Elementary Library exist to build a culture of literacy and love of reading among our students. The library provides books that are high-quality, varied in subject, and matched to a student's specific abilities and interests. Instruction not only covers general library organization and etiquette, but also involves the application of technology and media to help students understand and explain what they are reading.

STEM

The goals of our Elementary STEM lab are twofold. First, we provide direct, standard-aligned instruction of science, technology, engineering, and math through hands-on building and modeling. Second, the STEM lab is an area where we focus on the kind of problem-solving, teamwork, and determination our students need to succeed academically and beyond. Activities include robotics, coding, model-building, movie-making, and much, much more.
