As many know, October is National Bullying Prevention Month. With help from the book, Spookley the Square Pumpkin, students and staff of WTSD took a stand against bullying. Through a variety of activities, students and staff were encouraged to “pledge kindness”. Activities included a field trip to Donnell Century Farm’s pumpkin patch as well as school-wide support by wearing orange on Unity Day, October 23rd. The anti-bullying campaign was topped off on October 31st, with dancing to “Spookley” music, face-painting, ASL art, and enjoying popcorn while watching the Spookley movie.
The goal of the fun-filled activities was to have the students and staff focus on “Being a Friend, NOT a Bully”. Students learned what a bully is and is not, how to deal with being bullied, and what to do if they see others being bullied. Spookley the Square Pumpkin is featured on the National Bullying Prevention website and most of WTSD’s teachers used Spookley to discuss the importance of being kind.
