 West Tennessee School for the Deaf (WTSD), located in Jackson, TN, is a state school that offers a comprehensive education to meet the needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students Preschool (ages 3-5) - 6th grade. At WTSD, we strive to provide a language rich environment using both sign language and English, and educational experiences that develop skills and knowledge that our students need to be successful members in their communities. The field of education is constantly evolving, and we strive to adapt and equip our faculty with the necessary resources they need to provide students with the skills they need.

In addition to providing preschool through sixth grade educational experiences, WTSD also offers specialist in deaf education, audiology, and speech and language. Our school also focuses on positive behavior. Our students make a promise each morning to be RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL, and COOPERATIVE by meeting positive behavioral expectations in all areas of the school. As a result, our school has a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm, and students are rewarded as these behaviors are observed.

Our school is served by dedicated men and women who are committed to providing all our children with an exceptional education in a safe, secure, and healthy environment.

Exploring Deaf Culture - A Family Workshop Series

Celebrate Deaf Awareness Month this September by exploring the rich culture, history, traditions, language, and experiences of the Deaf community! Families will have the opportunity to learn, ask questions, share experiences, and celebrate the many ways Deaf Culture brings people together. Whether you are new to Deaf Culture or already familiar with it, everyone is welcome to join the conversation and celebration.

Pancakes with Parents/Guardians

At WTSD, Pancakes With Parents/Guardians is coming up on August 20, 2026! Join us for breakfast from 7:30 AM to 8 AM. This meal is provided at no cost to parents, guardians, and families and will include pancakes and sausage. Please RSVP by contacting the main office at (731)423-5705 or by email at [email protected]. After breakfast, we invite parents and guardians to join us for a 30-minute classroom visit from 8 AM to 8:30 AM. We look forward to sharing a morning of good food, connection, and time together!

Signing Stories Across Tennessee

Tennessee Schools for the Deaf is coming to Nashville! Join us for Signing Stories Across Tennessee, a free and interactive ASL storytime experience for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children, families, and caregivers. Enjoy live ASL storytelling, hands on ASL learning, fun activities, and opportunities to connect with others in the community. We can't wait to see you on June 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Nashville Public Library!
