PE Demonstration Day
The first thing you will notice upon arriving at one of Jeanne Fair’s annual Physical Education Demonstration days is the NOISE! Everyone in the room was laughing, yelling, and enjoying the activities in a loud way. There were smiles on all of the faces and the big “kids” seemed to be having as much fun as the small ones. Each year Jeanne Fair invites the Physical Education class from East Tennessee area colleges to come and join the fun and learn about how much fun teaching Physical Education can be. Together with ETSU instructor Chris Ayres, Jeanne coordinates a hands-on learning experience through total body movement and participation with the students of the Tennessee School for the Deaf. It was amazing to see the students take the lead and explain the games and activities to the college students. Most of the visitors had minimal signing skills, yet they responded eagerly to each child. One student from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee, was particularly noteworthy. His name is Kevin Tiggs and he is a student athlete from ETSU. He plays for the Buccaneer Basketball team. Kevin played along with each student and made everyone laugh. His patience and understanding was contagious! Kevin copied every movement of Elementary student Anna Steele as Jeanne Fair turned a Dr. Suess story book into physical exercise with FUN!
