Mission Statement
The teachers in Tennessee School for the Deaf's Language Arts Department are dedicated to promoting motivated, lifelong readers and writers by engaging students in authentic and meaningful literacy experiences.
Tennessee State Standards for Pre-K-12
The Tennessee State Standards is a guideline used in every classroom across the state of Tennessee to provide instructional consistency. The Tennessee School for the Deaf language arts curriculum follows the state standards and is designed to develop students' reading and writing skills. Assessments
Measures of Academic Progress (MAP)
All students participate in MAP testing multiple times throughout the school year. MAP is a test which measures growth and predicts proficiency over time.

Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP)
Students in grades 3 through 8 take the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) achievement test each spring. The achievement test is a timed, multiple-choice assessment that measures students' progress in Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Student results are reported to parents, teachers and administrators.

Stanford Achievement Test, 10th Edition (SAT)
The Stanford Achievement Test, 10th Edition (Stanford 10) is a widely used assessment published by Harcourt Brace Educational Measurement. It was designed to measure achievement in the major content areas commonly taught in grades 1 through 9.

The Woodcock Johnson III (WCJ III)
The Woodcock Johnson III is designed to measure intellectual abilities and academic performance. The Woodcock-Johnson III consists of two instruments: Tests of Cognitive Abilities and Tests of Achievement.

Writing Assessment (TCAP)
Students in fifth, eighth and eleventh grades take the TCAP Writing Assessment, which determines students' overall ability to communicate in writing. Emphasis is also placed on the ability of the student to communicate in a particular mode of writing.
