Students picked colors, lines, shapes and textures that best showed their emotions. After they completed their paintings they then studied about a 20th Century Group of Abstract Expressionists and picked the artist they thought best matched their painting style. The artists they studied were Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, Hans Hofman, Mark Rothko, Lee Krasner and Richard Diebenkom.
Oil Pastels on Paper and Mat BoardStudents picked an emotion and then conveyed that onto Mat Board with oil pastels. They then picked something living and portrayed it on paper, also using oil pastels. They were to use the quick strokes of the Expressionists but portraying actual living things.
Mono PrintsUsing plastic printing plates, the students painted a design using one color and then cleaned the plate and painted with a different color. Some of the students used as many as four colors in their prints.
Pop Art BottlesStudents studied the 50's Art Movement Pop Art and learned how fast food and mass produced products influenced art. They picked their favorite bottled drink and created a work on mat board using colored pencils, created several different color schemes and when finished, they painted the bottles with gloss medium and then when dried, they applied an ink wash.
T V Sets and Tote BagsThe High School Art Department was donated several shells of mini TV sets and used tote bags. The first semester students used the TV sets and the second semester students used the tote bags but all did the same concept. On the outside they created who people perceive them to be and on the inside they created who they truly are. Because they used discarded items, they learned how they can create beauty from someone else's trash. The work of Robert Rauschenberg influenced them.
Visual JournalsStudents studied the work of Vincent van Gogh, Robert Bearden and Frida Kahlo and were inspired to create these incredible journals of a recent event in their lives. They learned about collage and once again, they used found objects such as newspaper, magazine pictures and scrap paper to help them create these wonderful journals.
Clay PotsThe first semester students were given the clay and asked to express themselves in a three-dimensional design. They used beautiful free-form shapes and experimented with a variety of glazes to achieve these beautiful pots. The artist they studied was Pablo Picasso.
Portraits in ClayArtist, Robert Arneson inspired the students to create these wonderful expressions of emotion using clay. The pieces were bisque fired and then stained with acrylic washes and the covered with gloss medium.
